How do I know if all of my resources have a backup?

Learn more about the Unprotected Resource Audit report

Bocada Cloud can provide a daily audit - or comparison - of the assets that exist in your environment versus what has a backup. The Resource Audit reports show you how many resources were discovered - how many EXIST - according to the inventory sources you connect to Bocada Cloud. The EXISTING inventory is then compared to the work being done by the connected backup application(s) to determine which are protected by backups and which inventory resources are not protected by backups (unprotected). This information is presented in the Resource Audit Dashboard widget which links to the Resource Audit standard report with more detail.

Note: Only customers who have subscribed to the Pro or Ultimate subscription plans can access unprotected resource audit reporting. Customers on the Free or Standard plans, or those who have not connected an inventory source, will only see Protected resources - a list of resources with backups.

Unprotected Resource Auditing

Unprotected resource auditing starts with an inventory source. Currently Bocada Cloud supports AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and VMWare vCenter as inventory sources.

Once you connect an inventory source, Bocada compares all resources in your inventory against backups completed in the previous 31 days to determine if a resource is protected. If no backups are detected for a resource during the past 31 days, the resource is considered unprotected.

Resource Audit Report

The Resource Audit standard report features four tabs:

1 - Protected resources - resources that had a backup during the specified date range (defaults to last 31 days but a user can edit criteria to see a different date range).

2 - Unprotected resources* - resources in your inventory that do not have a backup during the past 31 days. This list also gives you the ability to select one or more unprotected resources to "ignore" and move to the Ignored Resources list. For example, if a resource is a development or test machine that doesn't need to be backed up, it can be ignored so it does not appear in the Unprotected list (and will be moved to the Ignored Resources tab).

3 - Ignored resources* - resources that you chose to exclude from the unprotected list because you do not want them to be backed up.

4 - All resources* - this is a comprehensive inventory list and includes all protected, unprotected and ignored resources.

*As stated above, unprotected resources are only displayed if you have set up a connection to an inventory source.

Inventory Solutions

Bocada Cloud has supported connectors for VMware vCenter, as well as AWS, Azure and Google Cloud's asset inventory functionality with the ability to add support for other inventory sources (e.g. ServiceNow CMDB) upon request by our customers. Inventory resources without backups (e.g. unprotected resources) are not billed or charged in the monthly Bocada Cloud subscription.
