Can I be notified by email when a backup job or data collection fails?

Learn how to set up a custom email notification when a backup job or data collection fails after X attempts

Overview

You can configure a custom email notification to be automatically sent when a backup job or data collection fails after a specified number of attempts. This can alert you to check Bocada Cloud and take appropriate action, and/or serve as an "email to ticket" solution (sometimes referred to as "SMTP push").

Instructions

  1. Log into Bocada Cloud and go to the Administration section on the left navigation menu, then select Custom Notification Settings:
  2. Click “Add a Custom Notification” and the right-side panel will display. Note: if you haven’t set up multiple organizations in your account, you won’t see the “Organizations” field as in the screen shot below.

3. Organizations: If you have set up more than one Organization in Bocada Cloud, you can choose whether the notification applies to one or all Organizations.

  • If you want the notification to apply to all Organizations, then leave the Organization field blank. This means, the trigger type, number of consecutive attempts and email recipients will be the same if a backup job or data collection failure occurs in any/all Organizations.
  • If you want to use different notification parameters (trigger type, number of consecutive attempts and/or email recipients) for only one or a sub-set of your Organizations, then select the Organization name(s) in the Organization field.

4. Connections: If you want the notification to apply to all of your connections to backup applications, then keep the default “All connections” selected. Or, if you want, you can set up a custom notification for each individual connection if the trigger and parameters are going to be different.

5. TriggerIn the Trigger section, click “Type” and select either: “Data Collection Fails” or "Backup Job Fails" from the drop-down menu.

  • Click the # field and select when you want the email to be sent (after how many attempts).
  • Selecting 1 will send you an email notification the first time the data collection or backup job fails. However, often a data collection or backup job resolves itself on a subsequent attempt, so many customers choose 3 attempts. That way, they are only notified if the failure occurs three times in a row.

6. Email Settings: Enter the email subject line, priority, and the email address the notification will be sent to. You can also add additional text in the email message body.

7. Preview: If you want to see what the email notification will look like, click the Preview button in the top right corner of the panel.

8. Save: Lastly, click the “Save” button to enable the notification to your notifications list.
