Learn how the Bocada Cloud Backup Health Score is calculated, and ways to improve your score
What does the score mean and how does it work?
The Backup Health Score is used an indicator of the overall efficacy of your backup operations using data connected to Bocada Cloud. It calculates an average score across all Organizations in your account, as well as individual scores for each Organization.
Criteria: The score factors in six measures (outlined below) and assigns points to each. The number of points (X out of a possible 100) generates a percentage toward achieving a perfect score of 100%. Some measures are more heavily weighted than others. Also, some are calculated on a sliding scale, while others are a simple "yes or no."
Calculation Frequency: The score will be calculated and published daily. Two measures that are weekly in nature will be calculated daily by looking back at the previous 7 days.
Scope: the score includes backup activity for all resources connected to Bocada Cloud, and does not distinguish whether they are endpoints or non-endpoint resources (e.g. servers, VMs).
Subscription Plans: All subscribers will be able to see the Backup Health Score widget on the Dashboard. However, only customers who are using a paid subscription plan (Standard, Pro or Ultimate) will be able to see the more detailed Backup Health Score report.
Backup Health Score Measures
1 - Daily Backups
This measures whether or not daily backups are running for each resource. For example, as displayed in the Job Trends report, is each resource backed up at least once per day? This measure assigns points using a sliding scale based on percent of total resources that have daily backups running. It is worth 20% of the overall score.
- How to improve your score on this measure: check the backup policy for each resource to ensure it is backed up daily, and that there are no missing backups.
2 - Full Backups
This measures whether or not a full backup is run at least once a week for each resource. This measure assigns points using a sliding scale based on percent of total resources that have a full backup completed once per week. It's calculated daily by looking back at the last 7 days to see if a full backup was run. It is worth 10% of the overall score.
- How to improve your score on this measure: check the backup policy for each resource to ensure it has a full backup run at least once per week.
3 - Backup Success Rate
This measures the average backup success rate for all resources on a weekly basis. For example, as displayed in the Executive Summary report, what is the overall success rate for all resource backups in the past week? This measure assigns points using a sliding scale based on the average weekly success rate. It's calculated daily by looking back at the last 7 days. It is worth 40% of the overall score.
- How to improve your score on this measure: improve backup success rates by ensuring you are automatically notified of backup failures (you can leverage several tools in Bocada Cloud to do that - see #4 below) and then quickly remediating them.
4 - Notification of Backup Failures
This measures whether or not at least one user within the Bocada Cloud account has a backup failure notification set up. That could include one or more of the following:
- A custom notification is set up to automatically send an email if there is a backup failure
- A ticketing integration set up to automatically create a ticket if there is a backup failure
- A distributed report configured to be emailed regularly that includes backup failure data (Job Activity, Job Trends, Backup Failure, Backup Failure: Consecutive Days, Backup Failure: Consecutive Attempts).
- How to improve your score on this measure: set up one of the above notification types to alert you when a backup fails.
5 - Standard Backup Activity Notification Email
This measures whether or not at least one user within the Bocada Cloud account has the standard Backup Activity Notification enabled to email a daily, weekly or monthly summary of backup activity, including all successees and failures. This is enabled by default for all users, but can be disabled. The measure assigns points if at least one user in the account has it enabled. It's worth 5% of the overall score.
- How to improve your score on this measure: enable the Backup Activity Notification email under User Settings in your Bocada Cloud account.
6 - Unprotected Resources
Customers subscribed to the Pro or Ultimate plan who have connections to vCenter, AWS, Azure or Google Cloud can take advantage of Bocada Cloud's Asset Inventory validation feature to identify unprotected resources (those that are not being backed up). This measures the percent of unprotected resources as displayed in the Inventory Summary report, excluding those that have been "ignored" (a user can "ignore" an unprotected resource because it does not need to be backed up, in the case of a development or test machine for example). This measure assigns points using a sliding scale based on the percent of unprotected resources out of the total resources being monitored in Bocada Cloud. It's worth 20% of the overall score.
Note: if a customer does not have subscribe to the Pro or Ultimate plan, or does not have a connection to vCenter, AWS, Azure or Google Cloud....<WHAT HAPPENS?>
- How to improve your score on this measure: protect resources that are currently unprotected by backing them up. If a resource does not need to be backed up for some reason (e.g. development or test machine), "ignore" that resource in the Inventory Summary report so that it is listed as ignored and not factored into the scoring.
