Learn how the Bocada Cloud Backup Health Score is calculated, and ways to improve your score
What does the score mean, and how does it work?
The Backup Health Score is used as an indicator of the overall efficacy of your backup operations using data connected to Bocada Cloud. It is comprised of average score across all Organizations in your account, as well as individual scores for each Organization.
Criteria: The score factors in six measures (outlined below) and assigns points to each. The number of points (X out of a possible 100) generates a percentage toward achieving a perfect score of 100%. Some measures are more heavily weighted than others. Also, some are calculated on a sliding scale, while others are a simple "yes or no."
Calculation Frequency: The score is calculated and published daily. A few measures are calculated by looking back a week or a month, depending on the criteria explained below.
Scope: The Backup Health Score includes backup activity for all resources connected to Bocada Cloud, and does not distinguish whether they are endpoints or non-endpoint resources (e.g. servers, VMs).
Subscription Plans: All subscribers will be able to see the Backup Health Score dashboard widget. However, only customers who are using a paid subscription plan (Standard, Pro or Ultimate) will be able to see the detailed Backup Health Score report.
Backup Health Score Measures
1 - Daily Backups
This measures whether or not daily backups are running for each resource. For example, as displayed in the Job Trends report: is each resource backed up at least once per day? This measure assigns points using a sliding scale based on percent of total resources that have daily backups running. It is worth 20% of the overall score.
- How to improve your score on this measure: check the backup policy for each resource to ensure it is backed up daily, and that there are no missing backups.
2 - Full Backups
This measures whether or not a full backup is run at least once a week for each resource. This measure assigns points using a sliding scale based on percent of total resources that have a full backup completed once per week. It's calculated daily by looking back at the last seven days to see if a full backup was run. It is worth 10% of the overall score.
- How to improve your score on this measure: check the backup policy for each resource to ensure it has a full backup run at least once per week.
3 - Backup Success Rate
This measures the average backup success rate for all resources on a weekly basis. For example, as displayed in the Executive Summary report: what is the overall success rate for all resource backups in the past seven days? This measure assigns points using a sliding scale based on the average weekly success rate. It's calculated daily by looking back at the last seven days. It is worth 40% of the overall score and is the measure with the highest impact on the overall Backup Health Score.
- How to improve your score on this measure: improve backup success rates by ensuring you are automatically notified of backup failures (you can leverage several tools in Bocada Cloud to do that - see #4 below) and then quickly remediating them.
4 - Notification of Backup Failures
This measures whether or not at least one user within the Bocada Cloud account has a backup failure notification set up for every Organization. That could include one or more of the following:
- A custom notification set up to automatically send an email if there is a backup failure
- A ticketing integration set up to automatically create a ticket if there is a backup failure
- A distributed report configured to be emailed regularly that includes backup failure data (Job Activity, Job Trends, Backup Failure, Backup Failure: Consecutive Days, Backup Failure: Consecutive Attempts).
- How to improve your score on this measure: set up one of the above notification types to alert you when a backup fails for connections in each/all Organizations.
5 - Standard Backup Activity Notification Email
This measures whether or not at least one user within the Bocada Cloud account has the standard Backup Activity Notification enabled to email a daily, weekly or monthly summary of backup activity, including all successes and failures. This is enabled by default for all users, but can be disabled. The measure assigns points if at least one user in the account has it enabled. It's worth 5% of the overall score.
- How to improve your score on this measure: enable the Backup Activity Notification email under User Settings in your Bocada Cloud account.
6 - Percent of Unprotected Resources
Customers subscribed to the Pro or Ultimate plans can take advantage of Bocada Cloud's Unprotected resource auditing feature to identify protected AND unprotected resources (those that are not being backed up) in your inventory. Once you have connected an inventory source, such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud or VMWare vCenter, Bocada Cloud audits your inventory and identifies which resources have not had a backup within the past 31 days and reports them as Unprotected. This measure assigns points on a sliding scale based on the percent of resources that are unprotected out of the total resources in your inventory that has been connected to Bocada Cloud. It excludes any resources that have been "ignored" from the scoring calculation (a user can "ignore" an unprotected resource if it does not need to be backed up, in the case of a development or test machine for example). This measure is worth 20% of the overall score.
Note: if a customer (a) is not subscribed to the Pro or Ultimate plan, or (b) is a Pro or Ultimate plan subscriber but has not connected an inventory source to Bocada Cloud, then unprotected resource auditing can't be conducted, and no points will be awarded for this measure.
- How to improve your score on this measure:
- Pro & Ultimate Plan subscribers: connect an inventory source to Bocada Cloud (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud or VMWare vCenter) and use the Resource Audit report to see which resources are unprotected and then ensure they are backed up. If a resource does not need to be backed up for some reason (e.g. a development or test machine), "ignore" that resource in the Resource Audit report > Unprotected Resources tab so that it is listed as ignored and not factored into the scoring. If your inventory source is not currently supported in Bocada Cloud, let us know by submitting your request using a support ticket, or contact us.
- Free or Standard plan subscribers: upgrade to the Pro or Ultimate subscription plans to connect an inventory source to Bocada Cloud and take advantage of audit reporting of unprotected resources.
Average Score Across Multiple Organizations vs. Individual Organization Score
Each Organization set up within the Bocada Cloud account is evaluated and given a Backup Health Score on its own based on the backup data and configurations associated with the organization. The ability to view an average Backup Health Score across multiple or all Organizations is based on user roles.
- Super Administrators: These users can access data from all Organizations and will see a Backup Health Score widget on the Main Dashboard that reflects the average score across all Organizations set up in their Bocada Cloud account. They can select an individual Organization's Dashboard to see the score for that Organization only or view the scores of every Organization on the Backup Health Score report.
- Users with access to multiple Organizations: Users who are granted access to more than one Organization will see the Backup Health Score widget on the Main Dashboard reflect the average score across the Organizations they have been granted access to. They can also select an individual Organization's Dashboard to see its score or view the scores of multiple Organizations they have access to on the Backup Health Score report.
- Users with access to only one Organization: these users will only see one Backup Health Score for the single Organization they have been granted access to in the Dashboard widget as well as on the Backup Health Score report.
FAQs
Q: I can't see the Backup Health Score widget on my Dashboard
A: If you have configured the layout of your Dashboard in the past to move widgets into new spots, the new Backup Health Score widget may appear at the very bottom of the page. You can either click the "Edit Dashboard Layout" icon at the top right corner of your Dashboard (hammer/paintbrush icon) and move the widget and place it where you want it to appear, or "restore Bocada Defaults" to restore the Dashboard layout (of one or all dashboards) to the default view which puts the new Backup Health Score widget in the top left corner.
Q: I edited the criteria of the Backup Health Score report to show "Current Week" and it's not showing me the past seven days on the graph. Why?
A: The "Current Week" is defined as starting on Monday. For example, if you are looking at the report on Thursday, September 25, 2025 and select to view data for the "Current Week," it will start on Monday, September 22, 2025 and show the values for each day up to Thursday, September 25, 2025. If you would like to see the data for the past seven days, use the "Past N days" option and enter 7.
Q: I edited the criteria of the Backup Health Score report to show a larger date range and it's not showing me the data point for each individual day. Why?
A: If you select a larger date period, the graph automatically displays a representative sample of days within that period to show changes over time while maintaining a readable (and usable) graphical report.
